Guatemala Project
- Building Basic Education in Guatemala:
- The project involves building classrooms additions onto current schools in the Municipality of Uspantan, Quiche, Guatemala.
The current conditions are deplorable and include: OVERCROWDING - POOR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT - POOR EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES - MULTIPLE GRADES BEING TAUGHT IN ONE CLASSROOM.
We have partnered with the Rotary Club of Canmore for initial funding, The NGO: Hearts and Hands, The municipality of Uspantan, and the Rotary Club of Guatemala Sur.
updated March 25, 2011:
Since 2007, when we first entertained the classroom building project in Guatemala, Calgary West has contributed $55,000.
Other Rotary clubs contributed $68,000, of which the majority has come from our
partner in the project, that being the Canmore Club.
- We have received $41,000 from CIP and its predecessor, Wild Rose Foundation.
- CRCID has contributed $120,000 in matching funds.
- TRF has committed matching funds of $64,000.
This brings the total to almost $350,000 dollars. Our contributions have seen a growth of almost 7:1!
When this current activity is completed in 2013, we will have achieved the following results:
- 16 villages will have been impacted.
- We will have impacted the learning environment for over 5,000 children and made space to add in 1,000 more.
- 38 full-size classrooms will be constructed.
- 4 cement play areas completed.
- 4 kitchens built.
- 4 latrines will have been added.
- Water filtration for each classroom has been donated.
We are organizing a trip to Guatemala in last half of September and would really like to make this a Rotarian trip, so we encourage as many members to at least inquire, if not for this year, maybe another
year. There will be some hands-on work to be done on the schools while in Uspantan and there will also be some stove building as well.
