Sam Switzer by Don Axford
Sam Switzer was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurship from Mount Royal University. But I'll still call him Dr. At the presentation, Sam spoke about his life.
His folks had a store on 4th St. E. At the age of five (yes, 5) Sam would take his new wagon and collect ice chips from under the ice train. He would then sell them to a neighbour lady for a few cents. He said that everything was profit. When he got a bike, he delivered drugs - no, not dealt, but delivered.
He left school after grade 9 and began a life in business. He tried the car business and one client asked him to find a Buick. He found one with 25,000 miles on it and sold the car. He was shocked when the man came back and asked for his money 'cuz the car had 125,000 miles on the odometer. Dr. Sam gave up the car business.
His legendary career led to many accomplishments. He spoke about the love of his life, Betty, and his five children and three step-children. He spoke about his hour of prayer that begins every day. He thanked his Rotary family.
When Sam sat down, a spontaneous standing ovation spoke the club's thanks. Our Dr. Sam was seen brushing the tears away. David Watson presented the Boltman.
Jim Willson quietly said that Sam had made significant donations to both foundations. Thanks Sam Switzer. Shalom! Shalom! |
