Calgary West's Humanitarian Contributions
Community Initiatives:
Habitat for Humanity: an ongoing project funded by operating casinos on their behalf and providing hands on volunteer support to build three homes in Calgary
Rotary Flames Partnership: supporting the partnership which has created the Rotary Flames House, a hospice for terminally ill children, and, the nearby Rotary Park, a safe and clean sanctuary for visitors and children, and the REACH program which supports the medical community in areas such as heart disease, neuroscience and bone and joint health.
Rotary Challenger Park: construction and ongoing support and funding of the park, a barrier free meeting and recreational facility that is accessible to all people.
Calgary Military Museums: providing funding for the expanded/consolidated museum in the interest of educating Calgarians about of military history.
Meals on Wheels: funded an upgrade/expansion of their food preparation facilities.
It's a Crime Not to Read: funding a program run by the Department of Education, City Libraries, Calgary Police Service, to help Children to read.
Hull Homes: funding programs for children with behavioural issues.
Salvation Army Christmas Kettles: members take their positions in the malls and ring the bell for donations.
Art a la Carte: funding for art and "Sky Window" for patients at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre
Motive Action: providing support by assisting in operation of fundraising with casinos and golf tournaments
International Projects:
Guatemala: funding and providing in partnership with other Rotary organizations, volunteer support to build classrooms, stoves and sanitary facilities.
Mexico: funding and hands on volunteer support to help build four homes in Ensenada.
Colombia: funding in partnership, a clean water project for an estimated 5000 people.
Uganda: funding in partnership, a project to provide services and support of AIDS orphans and affected/infected adults through education, training and microcredit banks.
Kenya: funding equipment for the Hawkers Market Girls Centre which trains youg women from the street to make them self sufficient.
Ghana and Benin: funding Medic Canada to expand microcredit banks primarily for women.
World: funding the Rotary International initiative to eradicate polio.
World: funding Clowns without Borders recognizing the importance of humour in the healing process. |
