January 29, 2010 Guest Speaker Bishop Fred Henry, Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, on the homeless in Calgary.

Bishop Fred Henry
Dan Doherty introduced Bishop Henry who was to speak about homelessness. Dan told a golf story about Mike Carlin and the bishop. Did that ball really go in the hole, Mike?

Bishop Fred has an abundant sense of humour. It has been said of Fred that he never saw a microphone that he didn't love. It has also been said that he once did not believe himself to be opinionated. The response from his clergy staff was: he had an opinion about everything.

When approached to be on a homeless eradication committee, the bishop was not really interested until he heard that they wished to end this problem in Calgary in ten years.

Any successes: yes, siree! 200 families housed. 1200 people in two years. We need to support those in need or we too will be diminished. The plan is to give housing first and then work on the social problems each person has.

The bishop hopes that each of his parishes will adopt a family. The need is for friendship and mentoring. Our previous policies around environmental issues (like spitting) do not work. We cannot drive the poor away.

The Bishop praised the Provincial Government for massive financial support. Thanks Yvonne Fritz.

The group's ten year plan is to lead people to a home. (all roads lead home). Ted Valentine thanked Bishop Henry and presented the Boltman.
