Weekly Speaker Program

November 13, 2009 Guest Speaker George "Bulldog" Hansen Calgary Stampeders alumnus.

George
Clarence introduced our guest speaker, which included Des leading us in song, which we actually accomplished pretty darn well - amazing!!

George "Bulldog" Hansen has worn a number of helmets - player, minor football coordinator, director of player personnel, scout, guest coach, and assistant general manager.

His teams always wore red and white: Balmoral Jr., Western Canada High, Calgary Bronks Jr., Sunflower Junior College (Mississippi), University of Georgia and the Calgary Stampeders.

He signed his first contract with the Stamps in 1959 and, standing at 6'2" and weighing 240 pounds, this was the fulfillment of his boyhood aspirations.

He played for the Stamps for eight wonderful years, scored a memorable touchdown and his only disappointment was that the team never made it to the Grey Cup whilst he was a member.

Bulldog opened the meeting up for questions which he answered in a forthright and diplomatic manner, for a footballer that is!

  • The play is softer these days, no real blocks and tackles like there use to be.
  • Less intensity in play, although the Rough Riders and their fans show it best.
  • He loved beating Edmonton throughout the years, at every level of play.
  • The best club is the best club on the day.
  • Too much showboating, it's banned and called taunting in college football.
  • And it was 50 years ago this year that he first played for the Stamps.
Go Bulldog go! Lots of fight left yet I'd say. George was thanked by Brian Wintonyk, who presented him with a Boltman.
