HANDS ON SERVICE PROJECT AT THE FIELD OF CROSSES
For most of the year it is just a field, a five acre City Park known as Sunyside Bank on which only a cenotaph recognizes its significance. But for 11 days in November Sunnyside Bank Park becomes The Field of Crosses and the most spiritual place in Calgary. This year Calgary & area Rotarians are invited to participate in sponsoring The Field of Crosses financially as well as in service. Here's your opportunity to work alongside fellow Rotarians as well as their friends and family (Each One Bring One!).
Just click here to see the time slots available and sign up to be in service to those we remember at this time.

COFFEE AT THE CROSSES
You are invited to - COFFEE AT THE CROSSES – Meet at West end of the Field adjacent to the parking lot located at 200 Memorial Drive NW
For eleven days leading to Remembrance Day, on a five acre park on Memorial Drive, 3,500 crosses stand as silent sentinels reminding Calgarians of the ultimate sacrifice paid by our military to protect the freedom we enjoy in this great country. The Field of Crosses recognizes individually the 3,500 Southern Albertans who paid the ultimate sacrifice but also recognizes that, from all across this great country called Canada, 120,000 heroes gave up their lives for our freedom. 120 special crosses on a knoll in the park recognizes those 120,000. WE WILL NEVER FORGET It is incumbent on all to honour our fallen. Each day that passes we move further away from the wars our country was involved in; the heroes pass, time pushes on and the future gets in the way of the past as we move through our own days and months and years. The Field of Crosses Sunlight and Sunset and Remembrance Day ceremonies are important reminders. |

KOTO - Know One, Teach One
Nov. 22, 2021 7:00 p.m.
Meeting will open for entry at 6:30 PM MDT and begin at 7:00 PM MDT. Join Zoom Meeting Meeting ID: 841 3358 2710 For in person attendance ( Click Here ), registration by Thusday Nov 18 at 5:00 PM is required. Jimmy Pham AM Born in Saigon and raised in Sydney, Jimmy Pham returned to Vietnam in the late 1990s to work as a tour leader. While in Hanoi, he struck up a friendship with a group of young people living and working on the streets to support their families. He used his salary to help the kids, but knew this was only a temporary fix for a long-term problem. The street kids needed skills, jobs and an income for a better life. With that, Jimmy’s social enterprise, KOTO - Know One, Teach One - was born. Jimmy left his job in the tourism industry and opened a sandwich shop to provide jobs for young people. He soon realized that the children needed more than just a job, they needed vocational training to secure a better future for them and their families. KOTO’s student numbers increased and it expanded its operations to include a fine-dining restaurant, cooking courses and catering service. Jimmy has received numerous awards including the 2021 Waislitz Global Citizens’ Choice Award, 2013 UNICEF Zero Award for Social Innovation and 2011 Young Global Leader Award from the World Economic Forum as well as being appointed a member of the Order of Australia. |

Alicia Planincic Economist Alicia is an Economist at the Business Council of Alberta. She plays a crucial role in designing policy research and identifying actionable insights. She brings experience in data analytics, a passion for effective prose, and a fresh perspective of economics. Her career trajectory began with the serendipitous experience of being accidentally assigned a study hall in a classroom for economics, and the rest unfolded from there—she studied economics at Miami University, spent several years digging into data to better understand consumers for P&G, and later completed her MAT in economics education at the University of Georgia. Most recently, she reveled in the challenge of teaching college-level economics to high school students. Now, she has the rare opportunity to combine these disparate skills and experiences in a way that is deeply meaningful and wildly fun, to increase prosperity for all. A small-town girl with a big appetite for adventure, she is commonly found running the Bow river or lost between the aisles of the econ, psych, and history sections of Central library looking for her next read. New to Alberta, she aspires to ensure that Alberta is a place to dream, boldly tackle challenges, and, thrive, a place we all proudly call home. |

Feb. 24, 2022 6:00 p.m.
Wild Card Night - our Family Day holiday replacement is Thursday evening, February 24, 2022. Our incoming President, Linda says "Get out of your sweats or PJ's and join us at the Calgary Golf and Country Club. --- Come Out and Have Some Fun!" You'll learn about Calgary's Hangar Museum from Brian Desjardins, the dynamic and fully engaged Executive Director. It is an ongoing, expanding work and for many of us, it's one of those undiscovered "secrets" about Calgary. The museum has 31 aircraft, including military and civilian planes and helicopters and includes the Hawker Hurricane 5389 — a 77-year-old aircraft seen as among the top fighter planes of its day. Join us with family, friends, spouses and significant others or any other persons you would like to have attend next Thursday February 24 from 6 pm on. Here's what you'll enjoy:
Barbie will advise the deadline to confirm attendance but let us know now as soon as you can. Cost is $40 per person and payment is on the spot. HOW TO PAY! We will collect at the door in only one of these three ways (ie no payment through the website):
The CGCC will need to know how many to prepare for so please advise to Barbie and me at these emails: tjna2002@yahoo.ca AND bhames@shaw.ca Important: This won't be a Zoom/Hybrid meeting. In person only. |
