Mary Ann Houston is a Communications Strategist at City of Calgary Fire Department.

Mary Ann will play and chat about the pipes as well as explain the significance of the sword dance!

Mary Ann began piping at the age of 12, in Regina, Saskatchewan, where she was a member of the Fraser Pipe Band. During her summers, she studied with Pipe Major Donald MacLeod, at the Saskatchewan School of the Arts and the International Music Camp, ultimately receiving her Pipe Major’s and Advanced Instructor’s Certificates. Over the years, Mary Ann has led, and played with, numerous pipe bands in the prairie provinces. Most recently, she played with the Calgary Police Service Pipe Band and Calgary’s Rocky Mountain Pipe Band. These days, Mary Ann spends most of her piping time either teaching, piping for competitive highland dancers, or piping at private functions, in and around the Calgary area. One of Mary Ann’s piping highlights is having had the opportunity to pipe for highland dancers for the last five years, at the Annual Hawaiian Scottish Festival. This annual event celebrates the heritage and history of Scots in Hawaii. Sadly, the festival has been on hold since 2019, but hopefully it will be able to return again in 2023.
