On this warm, sunny September Monday, President Linda Anderson opened the meeting at 12.01pm with a historical perspective of Treaty Seven and she led the singing of ‘O Canada’, and welcomed all 22 zoomers, four zoom guests, and those physically present at the Grey Eagle Hotel.

Our soon to be newest Rotarian Jennie Zhe Yu introduced the guests on site at the Grey Eagle.

Linda talked about Rotary and the fun and experiences it provides and is hoping that our attendance at the Grey Eagle in person will increase and improve.

Today’s program: An expose of youth programs highlighting short term exchange and human rights as directed by team lead Natalija Reljic, and Judy Cochran.

There were three presentations:

In bound Ludovica Milesi (Ludo) of Udine, Italy led the charge describing her amazing experience in both, hosting Chavri Shah in Italy and her short-term visit to Calgary. Her amazing power p9int presentation, delivered from Italy included their visit to the Gremona Rotary Club, a trip to Venice where they visited Burano Island, Murano Island and the main Island of Venezia; a beach trip to Lignano, and Verona and then a train trip to Milan where they covered the highlights of the Il Duomo, the Armani collection and a huge park before leaving Italy for her trip to Canada. They were met in Canada by Chav’s mother and had a wonderful visit with trips to Kensington, McKenzie Lake, and on to the mountains, to Lake Louise, the Athabasca Icefields area, Banff, Canmore and Cochrane.  They then went on to visit Vancouver. She talked about her visit to Debbie McMillan’s Lake home at Tie Lake, her visit to Global Fest and her amazing experience with S'mores and Chit’s Creek.

Chavri Shah, our outbound student to Italy mirrored this visit with her perspectives on the entire experience highlighting her power point presentation with three major points: The enjoyment and education that travel provides; the cultural diversity and similarities we all experience; her newfound appreciation for what Rotary is all about and what it does. She saw aspects of poverty through her travel with Ludo and they realized that this something they may wish to address as young Retractors.

The third presenter was Davina Merritt, a student from Olds, Alberta that visited Winnipeg as part of a program on human rights centred at the Human Rights museum, where they experienced and heard about various Human rights issues that have been major world events of note. They learnt also about refugee’s vs immigrants, genocide, reconciliation, inter-generational trauma and upstanders to the cause of improving the human condition.

Judy Cochran presented the vote of thanks to our outstanding students after they answered some questions.

Next week: President Linda announced that next week’s “hodgepodge” meeting, which is the president’s program (as is the last meeting of every month) will only be held in person at the Grey Eagle. No Zoom, so please make a special effort show up in person in order that we can see you! A great opportunity to have in-person meetings like the old times. This will serve as the assembly where it is hoped we will hear reports from the Board on the program for their year.

Linda concluded with a famous saying on leadership.

The meeting was adjourned soon after 1 pm
