NSTEP is focused on building healthy habits for children, for life! We are an education hub of scientific, evidence-based knowledge that focuses on teaching healthy habits for children, for life. We want their brains to be powered and nourished through healthy eating and physical activity. Nutrition and activity build better brains and bodies. Deb’s goal today is that we will have a deeper understanding of why healthy eating and activity will build better brains.
By 2040 it is estimated that 70% of adults over the age of 40 will be overweight or obese. If this is true we have less than a generation to change this. It is possible and this is her mission.
The Canadian Health Survey conducted in 2013 showed there would be 56% fewer visitations of young adolescences (10-13) to physicians for mental health issues if;
1) You increased your grains, fruits, vegetables, meat, milk and
2) Decreased the amount of intake of sugars and fats
3) Increase the amount of physical activity
4) Get more sleep and less screen time.
Unfortunately only 21% of the young people completed seven or more of the recommendations, leaving 79% who did not meet expectations.
How do brains learn? Being able to understand how a brain learns can help us help our children and grandchildren. When the brain is under stress not much learning takes place. Physically active children have more active brains.
Wow! We were shown a barrage of slides showing the various parts and functions of the brain. Clearly, this indicates the importance of healthy food and exercise.
