A World Authority on Malaria and Dengue Fever from Tanzania

Premji was born in Iringa, Tanzania, to a somewhat poor Ismaili family who were often on the move. First in Morogoro, then in Tanga, then on the outskirts of Mtwara, he attended a series of public schools: “I did well in my studies and was active in sports, playing soccer, cricket, and volleyball.

With the support of a university sponsorship, he ended up at the Muhimbili Faculty of Medicine in Dar es Salaam. There he studied Medicine and later Parasitology and began building a reputation as a “malaria guru.”

As a specialist, Premji took part in several influential studies. He was a leader in the Bagamoyo BedNet Project, collaboration with Johns Hopkins University that analyzed the impact of insecticide-treated bed nets. And he helped to pioneer a new diagnostic tool, popularly known as the Rapid Diagnostic Test, that’s now deployed globally for malaria diagnoses, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.

Zul Premji retired to Calgary in 2016, to help take care of his grandchildren. “With time,” he writes, “hopefully I will return to Tanzania.” Until then, he speaks with the authority of someone who has met with success.

  • Please encourage lump sum donations vs. per km .

  • Members are encouraged to track their km’s on a weekly basis. Steps can be converted to km’s and mental health activities ( reading, painting, fishing, time with grandkids etc. 15 minutes = 1 km)

The intent is to create some “friendly Rotary competition” regarding our donations and km’s.

Canadians have never viewed the agriculture and food industries as being important.  There are some good reasons for this. Agricultural producers represent only 2-3% of the votes in this country, so it is very difficult to capture the attention of our political leaders – both provincially and federally.  But perhaps a more important reason is that the Canadian food consumer spends a very small percentage of their disposable income on food at approximately 10-11% and next to the United States this is the lowest in the world.  Canadians simply have the highest quality and an abundant supply of food at very low prices.  This however has changed in recent months as we see the cost to the consumer rising rapidly and now has become much more top of mind with the citizens of Canada.  There are a number of reasons for this, global weather issues, climate change, and recent civil unrest in many parts of the world predominately the Russian Ukrainian war.  These production related issues have been exacerbated with significant supply chain issues and supply shortages of fertilizer, and a lot of the inputs that farmers need to maximize crop production.  The  thing I find most frustrating is that many jurisdictions around the world have begun to make very significant demands on how farmers should produce the food we are so dependent upon.
