October 2026: Creating Opportunity Through Rotary

October is Rotary's Community Economic Development Month, a time to celebrate a simple but powerful idea: helping people build better futures for themselves.
Many of us know the saying about teaching someone to fish rather than simply giving them a fish. Community Economic Development puts that principle into action by helping individuals gain the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to create lasting change.
The importance of this work continues to grow throughout Rotary. In the most recent Rotary year, Community Economic Development projects received nearly US$9.7 million in Global Grant funding, representing a significant portion of Rotary's worldwide grant budget and reflecting a growing commitment to sustainable economic development.
The Rotary Club of Calgary West is proud to be part of that effort. Last year, our International Grants Committee supported a range of projects focused on education, housing, health, scholarships, and economic opportunity around the world.
One project that captures the spirit of Community Economic Development is the Servigua Microfinance initiative in Guatemala. Through small loans to Indigenous entrepreneurs, primarily women, families gain access to the capital needed to expand businesses, increase income, and improve their quality of life.
What may seem like a modest loan can have a remarkable impact. A market vendor can purchase additional inventory. A craft producer can grow production. A small family enterprise can become more stable and profitable. New income creates new opportunities, helping families support education, improve living conditions, and build financial resilience.
That is the strength of economic development. The benefits continue long after the original investment is made. Individuals become more self-reliant, communities grow stronger, and future generations gain access to opportunities that may not otherwise have existed.
None of this happens without the commitment of Calgary West Rotarians. Through events such as the Big Book Sale, casinos, bingo activities, the Stampede Breakfast, and many other fundraising initiatives, our members transform local effort into global impact.
As we celebrate Community Economic Development Month, we can take pride in knowing that Calgary West Rotary is helping create more than assistance. We are helping create opportunity, independence, dignity, and hope.
That is Rotary making a difference, one community at a time.
