Early detection (& training), diagnostics and treatment of breast and cervical cancer for Sierra Leone’s most vulnerable women.

Project Location: Sierra Leone (Freetown and Bo district)

Project Objectives: Diagnostics and treatment of breast cancer remain grossly underfunded and so come at a cost for Sierra Leone’s poorest families. Screening, diagnostics and treatment of cervical cancer also remains grossly underfunded. Consequently, many women who have cervical and/or breast cancer go undiagnosed and untreated. In a country where over 70% of  its population live below the poverty line and 86i% of the people who live in the countryside (i.e. Bo) live below the poverty line, the costs associated with screening (early detection), diagnostics and treatment presents a large barrier to accessing the necessary healthcare needed to manage their health conditions. Furthermore, thousands of women are uniformed about these 2 cancers. To that end, the key objectives of this project are:
  • Raise awareness and provide education arid training on breast and cervical cancer in Freetown and in Bo district, with a focus on early detection.
  • Provide diagnostics for 30 women and treatment for 15 women diagnosed with breast cancer free of charge.
  • Develop the cervical cancer screening, diagnostics and treatment capabilities at Well Woman Clinic.
  • Provide screening of 3000 women (minimum), diagnostics of 300 women (minimum) and treatment of women who are diagnosed with cervical answer free of charge.
  • Ensure the Clinic remains open throughout the Covid 19 pandemic period through the provision of the necessary PPEs.
These funds will be allocated to Well Woman Clinic towards addressing these objectives over a period of 2 years.

Target Group: Predominantly women who are also experiencing extreme poverty and are living in Freetown and or in Bo District. This includes but is not exclusive to: widows, persons living with HIV/AIDs, child-headed households and single mothers. So, a minimum of 3000 unique clients will be served. As such, 3000 unique families will benefit from education and training, screening, diagnostics and or treatment. The PPE items for the clinic will also help prevent the spread of the Covid 19 to and between Well Woman Clinic’s staff and its patients.
